چکیده

A pulsed 14 GHz ECR4 source, adapted to operate in the afterglow mode, was delivered by GANIL to CERN in the framework of the Heavy Ion Facility Project. After four months of operation to commission the facility, it completed its first operational run of nine weeks at the end of 1994, providing lead ions to nuclear physics and ion cooling experiments. A very stable beam, with a useful length of over 1 ms, of 80 eμA of Pb was provided by the source over this period. The operational problems experienced during the commissioning and operation, and the investigations to improve performance for the next experimental physics run are presented.

Afterglow mode and the new Micro Pulsed Beam mode applied to an ECR Ion Source

An increasing number of experiments in the field of low energy ion physics (< 25 keV/charge) requires pulsed beams of highly charged ions. Whereas for high-intensity beams (> μA) a pulsed beam chopper, installed downstream to the analyzing dipole, is used. For low-intensity beams (< 100 nA) the ion intensity delivered during the pulse may be increased by operating the ECR discharge in the after...

First experiments with gasdynamic ion source in CW mode.

A new type of ECR ion source-a gasdynamic ECR ion source-has been recently developed at the Institute of Applied Physics. The main advantages of such device are extremely high ion beam current with a current density up to 600-700 emA/cm(2) in combination with low emittance, i.e., normalized RMS emittance below 0.1 π mm mrad. Previous investigations were carried out in pulsed operation with 37.5...

Comparison of Operations of the Serse Ion Source at 18 and 28 Ghz

The SERSE source has been efficiently working at the Laboratori Nazionali del Sud in Catania since 1998, by operating at 14 and 18 GHz, with a maximum power of about 2 kW, for the beam injection into the K-800 Superconducting Cyclotron. In 2000 a collaboration was established in order to test the behaviour of SERSE at 28 GHz, so that a new operating domain could be studied, featuring a very den...

Progress and Perspective for High Frequency, High Performance Superconducting Ecr Ion Sources

Next-generation heavy ion beam accelerators require a great variety of high charge state ions with an order of magnitude higher beam intensity than is currently routinely available. Driven by this increasing demand for high performance ECR ion sources and enabled by advances in superconducting magnet technology, third generation superconducting (SC) ECR ion sources have been developed world-wid...

Beam experiments with the Grenoble test electron cyclotron resonance ion source at iThemba LABS.

At iThemba Laboratory for Accelerator Based Sciences (iThemba LABS) an electron cyclotron ion source was installed and commissioned. This source is a copy of the Grenoble Test Source (GTS) for the production of highly charged ions. The source is similar to the GTS-LHC at CERN and named GTS2. A collaboration between the Accelerators and Beam Physics Group of CERN and the Accelerator and Engineer...
